ZANU PF First Secretary and His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has said the country is committed to reducing emissions by 40% as it joins global efforts to contain climate change induced by human activities.
President Mnangagwa’s statements comes as the world gears for the 26th UN Climate Change of Parties (COP26) to be held in Glasgow, United Kingdom (UK) this coming month.
The Summit brings together parties in order to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in order to inspire climate action.
President Mnangagwa is expected to attend the summit in UK as he leads the Zimbabwean delegation and present the country’s mitigation measure and adaptation actions against climate change.
In his address ahead of the COP26 President Mnangagwa said:
“My country and parts of Southern African region continue to experience the devastating impacts of climate change, ranging from cyclone induced floods, recurrent droughts and shorter rain seasons. This is in spite of the fact that our continent is the least polluter.
“COP26 in Glasgow, must therefore be about action and the fulfilment of decisions of the past. In addition, concrete financial support is essential to combat climate change beyond mere rhetoric,” President Mnangagwa said.
Writing on his micro-blog Twitter, President Mnangagwa warned:
“If Climate Change continues at its current rate, thousands of Zimbabweans will lose their jobs, homes, or even their lives. Ahead of Cop26, Zimbabwe has now committed to reducing emissions by 40% before 2030. The time for words is over, we must act now.
Zimbabwe has not been spared from the effects of global warming as carbon emissions continue. President Mnangagwa in 2018 declared that climate change respects no borders calling for governments to act with speed to prevent potential dangerous impacts of science on the developing countries.
In line with the Party’s 2018 People’s Manifesto the ZANU PF led Government has already put in place comprehensive policies to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change through building dams and planting of trees amongst others measures.
